Following the visible successes of recent years, we are continuing our tree planting cooperation with ISCOT in the Madi Opei region in northern Uganda this year.
After having distributed more than 100,000 seedlings to village communities, farmers and schools in the region in recent years, this year we have distributed another 10,000 small trees to motivated farmers and farming communities. You can find our preliminary report and appeal for donations here
Our long-term plan for the project is to see a continuous increase in the number of seedlings distributed. To achieve this, we would like to move the cultivation of the seedlings from Kitgum to Madi Opei. This requires a secure water supply for the nursery, which we can now ensure by building a cistern.
Our partner from ISCOT, Joel, has already set up a small nursery near his house, the Rubanga Twero Nursery Bed (meaning in Acholi: God is kind), in which he is currently only working with a few dozen seedlings. With the construction of the water tank, there is now a constant water supply during the dry season and we will be able to grow up to 50,000 seedlings directly in the planting area from next season.
The water tank is 5 meters high and 3.5 meters in diameter, has a capacity of around 50,000 liters and is filled with rainwater. To do this, before the next rainy season, the roof of the adjacent house will be enlarged with a rod and corrugated iron construction and a drainage system will be created directly into the tank. The tank will also be equipped with a manual pump that allows the nursery staff to extract the water and transport it to the plants.
Our MttW-members Anna and Marcus were on site in January 2024 and were able to inspect and document the construction work. The opportunity was also taken to visit many planting sites from previous years and to collect additional GPS data and current photos. You can find a gallery of the construction on this page: Report on the construction of a water tank for the Rubanga Twerto tree nursery (german)

- Construction of a water tank at Rubanga Twero Nursery
- Investment amount of MttW: €5,331.31 for material and labor costs
- Construction period: January 2024, first ready for use for the 2025 planting period
- MttW team consisting of Anna and Marcus on site in January
- 10,000 seedlings distributed to farmers and village communities
- Investment amount of MttW: 5,636.98 € (0.56 €/seedling) for seedlings & distribution
- Planting period: April-June 2024
- Collaboration with ISCOT & local leadership by Jimmy, Joel and Village Champions
- Further cultivation of seedlings by the village communities, awareness raising and training by ISCOT and volunteers as well as MttW team
As in previous years, the distribution of the 10,000 seedlings was managed by ISCOT and supported by the
Village Champions . These are committed members of farmers’ associations/communities who publicize the project, communicate the requirements and are the first point of contact for interested parties. The seedlings were loaded into Joel’s tree nursery, onto the large truck or into the trunk of Jimmy’s Land Rover, and then driven directly to the selected farmers and their fields. In order to receive seedlings from our project, this year too, it was a requirement for the farmers to completely prepare the fields in which the seedlings were to be planted, i.e. to clear them of weeds, plough them and dig a hole every 3m.
You can see an example of how such a meeting and the training of the farmers by Joel and the Village Champions takes place in this video. We have also prepared a photo gallery for you:
Many thanks to all supporters – you are magic!
A special thank you to our local partners Jimmy and Joel, without whose partly voluntary work such a project would not be possible. Thanks also to the MttW team, Anna and Marcus, for their commitment and time to support this project! Our volunteers cover all costs associated with the trip themselves, so 100% of the donations go to the project.
We would like to continue our commitment in Madi Opei, Padibe and the entire Lamwo district! We
still need your support so that we can distribute as many seedlings as possible to motivated farmers again next year.
